Dr. Joe Cooper is a Beverly Hills board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician whose focus is on shoulder, elbow, hip and knee injuries and treatments. His practice is focused on helping his patients of all ages and athletic ability to achieve optimal performance and a pain – free fully functional life. He has learned from some of the most esteemed orthopedic surgeons in the country at USC and the world-renowned Steadman Clinic in Vail Colorado.
Q: Why did you choose to become an orthopedic surgeon?
A: Growing up I was always interested in athletics and medicine and using my hands. I played baseball in college and always wanted to use by hands to help people. Orthopedics is personally and professionally rewarding specialty because I get to work with patients using my hands and skills to help people get better so they can return to the sports and lives they love.
Q: Why did you choose to focus your practice sports medicine?
A: In sports medicine I get to help people improve their athletic performance, attain and regain fitness after an injury and prevent future injuries. I also help people who aren’t athletes to live a healthier life by restoring their joints and guiding them to improve their participation in the sports they love.
Q: How is orthopedics different from sports medicine?
A: Both specialties treat musculoskeletal problems but from different perspectives. As an orthopedic surgeon I treat injuries with surgery when needed. As a sports medicine physician I treat the whole athlete, including the non-surgical treatment and prevention of sports injuries. As a sports medicine physician I received training in all aspects of sports medicine not just musculoskeletal problems including injuries like concussions, injury prevention, and performance training. The combination of specialties allows me to offer comprehensive care for individuals who are active whether or not they are weekend warriors or competitive athletes, and sports teams.
Q: What is the most personally satisfying aspect of your work?
I am fortunate to interact with patients and care for them. I help my patients stay athletic and continue to play the sports they love and make them happy. I receive great personal satisfaction sharing my medical expertise. I am dedicated to taking care of my patients who will know they are well cared for. When they refer their friends and family to me for care, I know I have achieved my mission.
Q: Tell me about your practice.
My practice is a boutique orthopedic practice like a concierge practice but with insurance. At DOCS Spine + Orthopedics we have robotics, a surgery center, a hospital, physical therapy and pain management. We treat each patient individually one on one based on their needs.
Q: Why did you decide to join a practice in Los Angeles?
I’m an outdoors guy. I love the SoCal weather. I love to hike, mountain bike, and hang with family and friends. I came to LA to be close to my and my wife’s family and am very fortunate to have found a professional home at DOCS in LA.
